After an accident, what if you're afraid to drive again?

You know that you're a safe driver, and you even enjoy it. Then you get involved in an accident. It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with the other driver, who drifted into oncoming traffic while writing a text message.

You end up getting rushed to the hospital. You have serious physical injuries. You miss time at work. Your life will never be the same again.

Notably, even as you physically recover, you don't think you can drive again. You find the prospect too frightening. The accident was so traumatic, and the mental and emotional scars do not seem to heal as fast as the physical issues.

What should you do? Experts note that it may help to go on short drives with another person. Having them there grounds you, gives you support and also means that they can take over if you have a panic attack. It may take time to work through this.

They also say that it's important to talk about the accident and your feelings in the wake of that crash. If you keep the struggles you have to yourself, they often feel far harder to overcome. If you talk through the crash or write down what happened, and then you talk with a friend or a therapist about your stress and anxiety, you may slowly begin to get through it.

It's essential to understand that an accident may bring about more than just physical changes in your life. Make sure you know if you have a right to financial compensation for medical as well as mental health treatment if you need it.
