Can you get a DUI without a car?

You don't want a DUI, but you do want to go out to the bar with your friends, and you don't want to pay for an Uber ride home. If you cannot get a ride with someone else, or if you think they may also be too intoxicated to drive, what should you do?

Many people try to find another means of transportation. After all, you can only get a DUI in a car, right? As long as you stay out of your car, you should be fine.

Not so fast. People often think that DUI charges are for drivers in car and trucks, but they actually extend beyond that. Just picking another means of transportation does not guarantee that you will not face charges.

For instance, you can get a DUI if you are intoxicated while riding a bicycle. There is One man was arrested for driving a riding lawn mower while drunk. In another, more recent case, two men were pulled over in an Amish buggy because police saw a case of beer and noted that they were drinking as they drove the buggy.

Anything that qualifies as a vehicle and has wheels can lead to a DUI arrest. It does not have to be a car. Most arrests do happen to people in cars since they are such a popular form of transportation, but don't assume you can use something else without repercussions.

If you do get arrested on DUI charges, it's essential to take the matter seriously. Make sure you know what legal defense options you have.
