FMCSA to Study Anew the Factors in Large-Truck Crashes

Ohio residents who have been involved in a truck accident will likely want to know just how the other side was at fault. There are many factors at work today, especially in the trucking industry, that are making drivers more prone to unsafe behavior. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will be conducting a study on these factors in big rig crashes.

First Study in Over a Decade

The last time the FMCSA conducted a large-truck crash causation study was in 2003. Since that time, there have been changes in technology, roadway designs and, above all, driver behavior that need to be analyzed.

Technology a Factor in Truck Crashes

Among the technological changes are the introduction of navigation systems, fleet management systems and vehicle safety features in the majority of commercial truck fleets. These, along with the ubiquitous smartphones, are contributing to driver inattention.

That safety features are brought up here may seem odd. The reality, though, is that many truckers overestimate them, feeling that they can be less alert when the features are engaged.

Study Will Address Automation

After establishing the most common factors in large-truck crashes today, the FMCSA intends to create effective crash avoidance and mitigation strategies. Researchers hope that these will even help guide the making of automated driving systems.

For Crash Victims Seeking Compensation

If you are injured in a tractor-trailer accident that was caused by a distracted or otherwise negligent truck driver, you may need to undergo extensive and expensive medical care and treatment. If this is the case, you may find it advisable to have the assistance of an experienced attorney when seeking compensation for your medical expenses and other losses.
